North American History
When does the history of North America begin? Well, some people would say that the history of this region of the world began when Columbus "discovered" the Americas. But is that really when it began? What about the millions of Native American people who lived in the area for thousands of years before Europeans ever landed on eastern shores of the continent? What about the Viking expeditions that landed far to the north 1,000 years ago? The history of North America is actually quite rich and diverse, and spans a period of time 1000s of years long.
In this section you will learn about the continent's first inhabitants: the Iroquis, the Chinook, the Lakota, the Zuni, the Shawnee, and countless other nations, tribes, and families. You will learn about Leif Ericson and the first Viking settlements in what is now Newfoundland, on the Northeastern shores of Canada. You will find out about the first French and English settlers and the societies they created. You will learn about the role that African Americans played in building America, and about Spanish settlement in what is now California and New Mexico. You will learn about the men and women that lived in the North American past, and how they both affected, and were effected by, the great events in North American history.
